उत्तरं यत् समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षिणम् |
वर्षं तद् भारतं नाम भारती यत्र सन्ततिः ||

समुद्र के उत्तर में और हिमालय के दक्षिण में जो देश है उसे भारत कहते हैं तथा उसकी संतानों (नागरिकों) को भारती कहते हैं।
